Minimizing Spatiotemporal Mismatch in Urban Logistics: A Topology-Aware Poisson Boosting Framework (Hex-PGBM)

Alejandro Martin, Jorge García · Bugama AI Research Lab, Madrid

Supply (drivers) and demand (riders) in urban mobility are rarely aligned, and human dispatch relies on intuition that produces empty kilometres and lost revenue. The paper presents the Bugama Predictive Oracle: a forecasting engine on level-8 H3 hexagons with a Poisson-objective gradient boosting model (Hex-PGBM), fed with weather, calendar cycles and event gravity models, plus a new Adaptive Topological Smoothing step for sparse zones.

18.4%lower error than baseline models15%projected gain in fleet utilisation

Inside the paper

From hexagons to a forecast drivers can use

The city as hexagons

Madrid indexed with level-8 H3 cells, so demand is forecast per neighbourhood rather than per district.

Poisson gradient boosting

A model built for counts of trips, fed with weather, calendar cycles and the pull of events.

Adaptive Topological Smoothing

A post-processing step that stabilises predictions in quiet cells, where most hours have no trips at all.

Validated in Madrid

Compared with baseline models on real fleet data, with the results and their limits.
